DLC Royal Rumble - PS3 vs Xbox 360 vs Wii

December 21st, 2008

The console war is fought everywhere these days, but the internet seems to be where people are most vocal. It also serves to give each console its own set of downloadable content, fuelling the war even more. Each week we’ll give you a run-down of what’s available to download on the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Wii, and declare a winner.

Note: This round-up is based on UK releases to each console’s online service and does not include premium video content. Releases outside of the UK could vary.

PlayStation 3 - PSN

It’s a strong week for PSN with two new games, plenty of add-on content and the usual new bunch of tracks for Guitar Hero: World Tour and Rock Band. Crash Commando is the big release, offering multiplayer side-scrolling shooty action for a reasonable £7.99. SOLDNER-X is also worth a look, but not everyone’s cup of tea. On the add-on front, the pick is clearly the new festive pack for LittleBigPlanet, but the free content for Mercs 2 can’t be sniffed at. Wallpapers and Themes are also on offer, with the Savage Moon theme teasing the excellent castle defence game due in the next few weeks.

DLC round-up isn’t usually the place for us to moan, but we can’t help but feel disappointed that there’s still no sign of Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix on the Euro PlayStation store. While we’ve got our fingers crossed for a release next week, we’re not getting our hopes up.

Xbox 360 - Marketplace

Despite the Christmas holiday approaching there’s a decent selection of content on Xbox LIVE Marketplace this week. The Gears of War 2 map pack tops the list, despite being a tad expensive in our book at 800 MS Points for just three maps, but free XBLA game Dash of Destruction is also likely to go down well with Achievement hunters. Raze’s Hell is a decent if not overly memorable Xbox game, while there’s some new free content for Lips, Mercenaries 2 and your Avatar.

If you’re yet to see the trailer for Rockstar’s first GTA 4 episode (exclusively arriving on Xbox 360 in February), you can get the Lost and Damned trailer on Marketplace, along with trailers for Mafia 2 and the Gears of War 2 map pack we mentioned earlier. And the round-up can’t be complete without mentioning the selection of new tracks for Rock Band and Guitar Hero: World Tour.

Dash of Destruction: Free
Raze’s Hell: 1200 MS Points

Gears of War 2 Combustible Pack: 800 MS Points

Wii

While there are four WiiWare games on offer this week, we recommend you put all your Wii Points in one basket and splash 1500 points on World of Goo. This structure building puzzle game is one of the best WiiWare games on offer, if not the best and it’ll likely go down a storm with players of all ages. If you’ve got some points left over and have been enjoying the Art Style series on WiiWare, ORBIEN might be worth a look at 600 Wii Points.

WiiWare
Art Style: ORBIEN: 600 Wii Points
World of Goo: 1500 Wii Points
Sudoku Challenge!: 500 Wii Points
Niki - Rock ‘n’ Ball: 500 Wii Points

And the winner of this week’s DLC Royal Rumble is…

Draw
It’s a tough decision this week. While Xbox 360 and PS3 each have a strong selection of free and premium content to choose from, the Wii has the best game available this week in the shape of World of Goo. We feel that the quality of World of Goo makes up for a lack of content overall, so we’re declaring this week a tie. Good times for everyone, unless you’re a Euro PS3 owner still waiting for SSFIITHDR.
